I just got mine and have enjoyed what I've heard so far of disc 1. Exceptional, high energy Jack Straw, which isn't normally one of my favorite tunes. Spirited and tight Dancin' with Jerry in an exploratory mood but not producing anything remarkable (though I should listen again before saying that), segueing into a dynamite Franklin's.

Sound quality is better than I had expected from a cassette master. I could persuade myself that the drums are hazier than with a reel master and that there is less acoustic space between instruments, but I'm not sure I would have noticed that if I hadn't known it was a cassette. And the resonant sounds of guitars and keyboards are sweet and pure.

I second gc's nomination of an April 78 installment (really? you'd pay $40?). I'm also hoping for Feb 68, Apr 70, June 76, and Oct 73.

Wow, wow, wow! Disc 2 is a blast! I haven't heard Shakedown yet--jumping right to Terrapin for the first listen, which is maybe my favorite commercially released version. Playin' has some lovely contributions from Brent, complemented nicely by the rest of the boys.

But the real treat is NFA > Dew, both of which are rich, punchy versions with Phil and the drummers strong in the mix and doing grate stuff. I can't wait to listen to them both again. The Dew may be the most emotionally powerful version I've heard from any year. Jerry is more spiritual leader than singer. How could they have produced such awesome beauty and not return to the tune for another six months?!?
